BIRTH & ACCOMPLISHMENT

Born in November 24, 1784 in Orange County, Virginia. Zachary Taylor was an American military leader served in the army for some four decades, commanding troops in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War (1832) and the second of the Seminole Wars (1835-1842). He was the 12th president of United States.

FIRST LADY

On 21 June 1810, he married Margaret Mackall Smith age 31, in her sister's log house in Louisville, Kentucky. and they went on to have six children. Their second daughter, Sarah Knox Taylor, would marry Jefferson Davis, the future president of the Confederacy, in 1835; she died three months later.

HOUSE / RESIDENCE

The Zachary Taylor House, also known as Springfield, was the boyhood home of the twelfth President of the United States, Zachary Taylor. Located in what is now a residential area of Louisville, Kentucky, Taylor lived there from 1795 to 1808. He owned a second plantation in Mississippi.

SIGNATURE

Zachary Taylor does not seem to have enjoyed writing, as his letters are generally uncommon. He spent his entire pre-presidential career in the army and many of his documents and letters while in the service were written out by aides for his signature. There are very few letters explaining his beliefs in detail, though a number of letters from the 1848 campaign express them simply and succinctly. Once Taylor took office, he became the first president to routinely delegate the writing of his correspondence to secretaries, and the content of his presidential letters tends to be very routine.
