BIRTH & ACCOMPLISHMENT

Born on 23rd April 1791 James Buchanan was there a American lawyer, Politician and 15th president of United States who served from 1857 to 1861. James Buchanan is most famous for being the last president before the start of the Civil War. Although he tried to prevent war, many of his policies ended up dividing the Union even further. He remains the only President to be elected from Pennsylvania and to remain a lifelong bachelor.

FIRST LADY

Buchanan never married and remains the only bachelor president. In 1819, when he was 28 years old, he became engaged to Anne C. Coleman, the daughter of a wealthy Pennsylvania family. He broke off the engagement for an undisclosed reason, and shortly afterward Coleman died, possibly a suicide.

Harriet Rebecca Lane Johnston acted as first lady of the United States during the administration of her uncle, lifelong bachelor President James Buchanan, from 1857 to 1861.

HOUSE / RESIDENCE

Wheatland, or the James Buchanan House, is a brick, Federal style house outside of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in Lancaster Township, Lancaster County. For 20 years, it was the beloved home James Buchanan. Situated on a 10 acre Campus of History in the heart of Lancaster County, Wheatland is a beautifully preserved Federal style mansion restored to reflect the appearance of the house during Buchanan's 1856 campaign for the Presidency.

SIGNATURE

James Buchanan was enmeshed in the antagonism between the North and South, as secession became a fact. His most interesting pieces relate to secession and the factors leading up to the Civil War. Also interesting are letters from his service as Polk's Secretary of State. His letters reveal a clever politician, but contain little about himself and generally make for an average read. He believed in his party’s policies and was well-written, however, few letters can be called inspirational or important. He seems to have had little to say thereafter.

QUOTES

“The test of leadership is not to put greatness into humanity, but to elicit it, for the greatness is already there."

DEATH

On June 1st 1864, President James Buchanan died at the age of 78 at his home at Wheatland. He was interred in Woodward Hill Cemetery, in Lancaster. On the day before his death, he predicted that "history will vindicate my memory," but historians continue mainly to emphasize his failure to deal with secession.
