HOUSE / RESIDENCE

The historic Andrew Johnson Homestead, located at 209 South Main Street, Greeneville, Tennessee. Built in 1848 and purchased in 1851. The house served as Johnson's primary residence until his death.

SIGNATURE

Andrew Johnson did not enjoy writing letters and those of any period of his life are scarce. Very few of the letters that do exist have good content or contain revealing information, making it difficult to understand him through his writings. The few gems in his correspondence seem to be dated after his presidency. After the Lincoln's assassination, Johnson had to bring the country through Reconstruction, with both the returning southerners and radical northerners pulling him in different directions.
