Born on December 29 1808 in grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina. Andrew Johnson was the 17th President of United State. He was the vice president at the time of assassination of Abraham Lincoln. He is also known for being one of the three presidents to be impeached. During Andrew Johnson's presidency, his secretary of state, William Seward, negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million. At the time of the 1867 deal, critics dubbed it “Seward's Folly.” Alaska became the 49th U.S. state on January 3, 1959.

On May 17, 1827 Andrew Johnson, 18, married Eliza McCardle (img.1), 16, at the home of the bride's mother in Greeneville. Eliza Johnson married at a younger age than any other First Lady. She was not often seen during her husband's presidency; their daughter Martha (img.2) usually served as official hostess.

The historic Andrew Johnson Homestead, located at 209 South Main Street, Greeneville, Tennessee. Built in 1848 and purchased in 1851. The house served as Johnson's primary residence until his death.

Andrew Johnson did not enjoy writing letters and those of any period of his life are scarce. Very few of the letters that do exist have good content or contain revealing information, making it difficult to understand him through his writings. The few gems in his correspondence seem to be dated after his presidency. After the Lincoln's assassination, Johnson had to bring the country through Reconstruction, with both the returning southerners and radical northerners pulling him in different directions.

On July 31, 1875, Senator Andrew Johnson died of a stroke at age 66 while visiting his daughter in Elizabethton, Tennessee.
