James Monroe I was a lawyer, diplomat, American statement, founding father and fifth president of United States. He is perhaps best known for establishing the foreign policy principle that came to bear his in the Monroe doctrine. He is also the person for whom the capital city of Liberia was named.

While a delegate to the continental Congress in New York, James Monroe met Elizabeth Kortright in 1785 they were married the following year and eventually had three children. Elizabeth Monroe was noted for her beauty and elegance, her aloofness made her unpopular.

Highland, formerly Ash Lawn–Highland, located near Charlottesville, Virginia, United States, and adjacent to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, was the estate of James Monroe, fifth president of the United States. Purchased in 1793, Monroe and his family permanently settled on the property in 1799 and lived at Highland for twenty-five years.
